SEER2 Explained: What It Means for Your Covington AC
By HVAC Covington LA · Published October 2, 2026 · Updated October 7, 2026

SEER2 is the efficiency rating on modern cooling equipment — the higher the number, the less electricity the system uses to deliver the same cooling. For a Covington home, where the AC runs about seven months a year, that number has a real effect on your summer bills, so it's worth understanding before you buy.
Here's what SEER2 means, the minimums that apply in Louisiana, and how to decide how high to go.
What SEER2 actually measures
SEER2 stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2 — it's the cooling output over a season divided by the energy used, measured under updated testing standards that replaced the old SEER rating in 2023. The "2" testing is more realistic about real-world ductwork, so SEER2 numbers run a little lower than the old SEER figures for the same equipment; it's not that the equipment got worse.
Higher SEER2 means lower running cost per hour of cooling. It does not tell you how much cooling the unit delivers (that's tonnage) or how well it removes humidity (that's sizing and design).
The SEER2 minimum for Louisiana
Louisiana is in the Department of Energy's Southeast region, which has its own minimum standards. For split-system air conditioners installed since January 1, 2023, the minimums are:
- 14.3 SEER2 for systems below 45,000 BTU/h (under ~3.5 tons)
- 13.8 SEER2 for systems at or above 45,000 BTU/h
- Any new AC installed here must meet these — your installer should confirm the exact category for your system
How high should you go?
You can buy well above the minimum — into the high-teens and low-20s SEER2 — but more efficiency costs more upfront, and the payback depends on how much you run the system and your electricity rate. The good news for the Northshore is that our long cooling season tilts the math toward efficiency more than it would in a cooler climate.
A practical approach: a mid-range SEER2 (often around 15–17) hits the sweet spot for many Covington homes, while premium high-SEER2 variable-speed systems make sense if you want the best humidity control and the lowest bills and plan to stay in the home. We'll run the numbers for your specific usage rather than just selling the biggest number.
Why SEER2 isn't the only number that matters
A high SEER2 rating won't save you a dime if the system is oversized, the ducts leak, or the charge is wrong. Efficiency on the label only becomes efficiency in your home when the system is sized with a load calculation, the ducts are sealed, and the unit is commissioned correctly.

At minimum, 14.3 SEER2 for split systems below 45,000 BTU/h and 13.8 SEER2 at or above that capacity — the DOE Southeast-region standards that apply to Louisiana for systems installed since January 1, 2023. You can go higher for lower bills; your installer should confirm the exact category for your equipment.
